Hydroseeding & Erosion Control in the Midlands

Delivering hydroseeding, erosion control and ecological seeding for construction, infrastructure and development projects across the Midlands

CDTS North & West delivers hydroseeding, conventional seeding, wildflower seeding and erosion control across the Midlands. Working with contractors, developers, local authorities and infrastructure teams, we support schemes ranging from highways and rail to housing, business parks, BNG habitats and public realm works, with equipment matched to access, scale and programme requirements.

Wildflower & BNG Seeding

Projects We Have Delivered Across the Midlands

The Midlands is one of the busiest construction and infrastructure regions in the UK, and our work here reflects that. Motorway widening, airport expansion, housing infrastructure, BNG compliance, and specialist facilities — the Midlands demands contractors who can operate at scale, meet tight programmes, and deliver to the specifications that Tier 1 clients and regulatory bodies require. We have been doing exactly that across this region for more than two decades.

M42 — Large-scale motorway hydroseeding

Client: Lowther

Sector: Highways/Motorway

Location: West Midlands

Year: 2025

Hydroseeding across 100+ hectares on the M42 motorway corridor — one of the largest single hydroseeding programmes in our current portfolio. Motorway construction and widening strips vast areas of vegetation from embankments, cuttings, central reservations and verges, and rapid re-vegetation is essential to control erosion, meet National Highways landscape requirements, and protect programme timescales. The M42 programme demonstrates CDTS's capacity to deliver at a scale that matches the demands of major national infrastructure — 100+ hectares requires fleet availability, material supply logistics, and the operational planning to work safely alongside live motorway traffic management.

Tarrington Wetlands — Wetland habitat creation

Client: Bentleys

Sector: Wetland Restoration

Location: Herefordshire

Year: 2024

Hydroseeding, conventional seeding and wetland plug planting across approximately 2 hectares at Tarrington in Herefordshire, including the installation of 15,000 wetland plug plants. Wetland creation projects require specialist knowledge of hydrology, species selection and establishment techniques — particularly where the aim is to create functioning wetland habitat rather than simply covering ground with vegetation. CDTS combined hydraulic and conventional seeding methods with hand-planted wetland plugs to establish a diverse, multi-layered habitat. This project demonstrates our ability to deliver integrated ecological outcomes where the specification goes beyond standard grass seeding.

Birmingham Airport — Aviation infrastructure hydroseeding

Client: VolkerFitzpatrick

Sector: Aviation/Infrastructure

Location: Birmingham

Year: 2025

Hydroseeding 6,000m² at Birmingham Airport for VolkerFitzpatrick. Airport environments present specific challenges for seeding contractors: airside security protocols, restricted access windows, strict site safety requirements, and the need to coordinate with ongoing airport operations. CDTS mobilised to deliver the hydroseeding programme within the access and security constraints of a live airport site. VolkerFitzpatrick is a major UK infrastructure contractor, and this project is representative of the scale and compliance standards our Midlands clients expect.

MIRA Vehicle Testing Ground — High-specification conventional seeding

Client: Jones Bros

Location: Cannock

Sector: Specialist Infrastructure

Year: 2025

High-specification conventional seeding across 12,000m² at the MIRA vehicle testing facility near Cannock. MIRA is one of the UK's foremost automotive proving grounds, and the specification for ground cover around testing tracks and facility surrounds is exacting — surfaces must be uniform, durable, and established to precise standards. CDTS North & West delivered this as a high-spec conventional seeding programme, demonstrating that our capabilities extend well beyond hydroseeding into precision seedbed preparation and establishment where the specification demands it.

Wistow Estate — BNG habitat creation

Client: Environment Bank

Location: Leicestershire

Sector: BNG/Ecological

Year: 2025

Conventional seeding across 15 hectares at the Wistow Estate near Leicester, delivering Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) habitat creation for Environment Bank. BNG compliance is now a mandatory requirement for most new developments in England, and demand for contractors who can establish species-rich grassland at scale is growing rapidly. At 15 hectares, this project required careful seedbed preparation and the application of specified BNG seed mixes to create measurable habitat units that satisfy the BNG metric. Environment Bank is one of the UK's leading habitat banks, and this appointment reflects CDTS North & West's growing role in delivering the practical, on-the-ground habitat creation that underpins off-site BNG delivery.

SEEDING SPECIALISTS

Why the Midlands Is a Core Region for CDTS North & West

Unlike our more distant operating regions, the Midlands is practically on our doorstep. Cheshire to Birmingham is approximately 90 minutes, and we reach most Midlands sites within two hours. This proximity means several things for Midlands clients:

Responsive mobilisation

We can be on a Midlands site at short notice. For programmes that depend on weather windows or possession timings, that responsiveness matters. We routinely schedule Midlands work within days of confirmation, and for urgent requirements — erosion after storms, programme-critical seeding windows — we can mobilise next day.

Specialist capability that local alternatives lack

The Midlands has general landscapers and amenity seeding contractors, but very few carry the specialist hydroseeding fleet, erosion control products (BFM and EFM for slopes up to 1:1), and commercial-scale conventional seeding capability that infrastructure and development clients require. Our fleet of 6 hydroseeders, including 6000L lorry-mounted machines for large-scale work and 2500L towed units for restricted-access sites, means we match equipment to the job rather than compromising on the wrong kit.

Cost efficiency

Travel is a fraction of the contract value on any meaningful Midlands project. On a 100-hectare motorway programme like the M42 or a 15-hectare BNG scheme like Wistow Estate, mobilisation cost is negligible. Even on smaller projects — 6,000m² at Birmingham Airport, 12,000m² at MIRA — the cost of getting specialist equipment to site is marginal compared to the cost of getting the specification wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How quickly can CDTS North & West mobilise to Midlands sites?

The Midlands is one of our closest operating regions. Cheshire to Birmingham is approximately 90 minutes, and we reach most Midlands locations within two hours. We routinely schedule work within days of confirmation, and for urgent or weather-dependent requirements, we can mobilise next day.

  • What scale of work do you handle in the Midlands?

Our current Midlands portfolio ranges from 6,000m² airport seeding to 100+ hectares of motorway hydroseeding on the M42. We match equipment and crew to the scale of the project — our 6000L lorry-mounted hydroseeders for large programmes, smaller 2500L towed units for restricted-access work, and conventional seeding teams for flat sites and precision applications.

  • Do you deliver BNG habitat creation in the Midlands?

Yes, and demand is growing. Our work at Wistow Estate in Leicestershire (15 hectares of BNG seeding for Environment Bank) and the Tarrington Wetlands in Herefordshire (wetland habitat creation with 15,000 plug plants) are recent examples. We also have a long-standing relationship with Solihull MBC for wildflower establishment across urban sites. As mandatory BNG drives more habitat creation across the Midlands, we are delivering an increasing volume of species-rich grassland, wetland and meadow establishment work.

  • Can you work on live motorway and airport sites?

Yes. The M42 programme involves working under live motorway traffic management, and Birmingham Airport required compliance with airside security and operational constraints. We carry full RAMS for working under traffic management and are experienced with the specific safety and access protocols that Tier 1 highway and aviation contractors require.

  • Do you handle SUDS pond and drainage seeding?

Yes. SUDS features are a standard part of most Midlands housing and infrastructure developments, and we have extensive experience seeding attenuation ponds, swales and basins. Our work at Roman Heights in Cannock is a good example — SUDS pond hydroseeding with vegetation establishment within four weeks using 100% organic, non-toxic mulch products that are safe for aquatic environments.
