Land Restoration Projects

Quarry, Landfill & Mining Site Restoration Across the UK

CDTS North & West has been restoring degraded land for over 30 years, from active quarry benches and capped landfills to former mining sites and brownfield land. We work with mineral operators, waste management companies and civil engineering contractors to establish vegetation that meets regulatory restoration conditions and supports long-term aftercare.

Our land restoration clients include Tarmac, FCC Environmental, Banks Mining, Biffa, Viridor and Waste Recycling Group, along with specialist landscape and environmental contractors.

Recent Quarry Restoration Projects

Swinden Quarry — North Yorkshire

Client: Tarmac

Service: Hydroseeding

Year: Autumn 2025

Phased restoration of quarry faces and benches at Tarmac's Swinden limestone quarry in the Yorkshire Dales. The site required vegetation establishment on exposed mineral substrates with poor nutrient levels and steep gradients typical of active quarry environments.

CDTS North & West hydroseeded 6 hectares using a grass and legume mix selected to colonise low-nutrient substrates and meet the site's restoration plan requirements. Hydroseeding was the preferred method for its ability to reach steep bench faces and bind seed to exposed rock surfaces where conventional drill seeding would be impractical.

Dene Quarry — Derbyshire

Client: Tarmac

Service: Hydroseeding

Year: Autumn 2025

Restoration seeding at Tarmac's Dene Quarry in Derbyshire, covering 15,000 m² of worked-out quarry surfaces. The hydroseeding specification was designed to establish stable vegetation cover as part of the site's progressive restoration programme, helping Tarmac demonstrate compliance with mineral planning conditions.

Banks Mining — Cumnock, Ayrshire

Client: Banks Mining

Service: Hydroseeding

Year: Summer 2025

Hydroseeding of restored surfaces at Banks Mining's Cumnock site in Ayrshire. Banks Mining is a long-standing CDTS North & West client across multiple surface mining operations. An earlier project at Banks Mining's Bradley site in County Durham required CDTS to deploy a Fendt 720 tractor and Caterpillar D9 dozer to tow the hydroseeder through waterlogged ground conditions that would have prevented access for most contractors. That project demonstrated the level of equipment capability and problem-solving CDTS brings to mining restoration, where ground conditions are rarely straightforward.

Recent Landfill Restoration Projects

Welbeck Landfill — Wakefield, West Yorkshire

Client: FCC Environmental

Service: Conventional seeding

Year: Autumn 2025

Restoration seeding of the capped landfill at Welbeck, Wakefield, for FCC Environmental. The key constraint was a tight deadline to establish grass cover before winter to prevent soil wash-off from the newly capped surfaces. Exposed landfill caps are vulnerable to erosion from heavy rainfall, which can compromise the cap integrity and trigger regulatory issues.

CDTS North & West completed the conventional seeding of all 6 hectares within the required programme window, establishing grass cover before the onset of winter weather. The work helps FCC Environmental meet their environmental permit restoration conditions.

Gowey Landfill — Chester

Client: FCC

Service: Conventional Seeding

Year: Spring 2025

Restoration seeding at FCC's Gowey landfill site near Chester, covering 6 hectares of capped surfaces. The project forms part of FCC's ongoing landfill restoration programme, with CDTS North & West providing conventional seeding to establish the required grass cover for regulatory sign-off.
